Here’s 2 simple patterns to make a crochet hair scrunchie. This pattern uses basic stitches and can be customized with different yarn types and hook sizes. I also add beads to mine to make them extra special and original.

For full instructions on how to add beads to your crochet projects, read this blog post.
Materials Needed:
- Elastic hair tie or some elastic
- Yarn (i’ve used cotton and acrylic DK, but you can experiment with weights and textures)
- Crochet hook (size appropriate for your yarn, typically G/4.0mm to H/5.0mm)
- Beads (if you’re using them)
- Scissors
- Yarn needle for weaving in ends
Method 1 – Crocheting around a hair tie:
If adding beads, pre-string your beads now. Then tie a slipknot onto your crochet hook. Insert your hook through the hair tie and pull up a loop. Yarn over and pull through both loops on the hook (this makes a single crochet). This secures the yarn to the hair tie.

- Single crochet (SC) all around the elastic hair tie, covering it completely with stitches. Keep pushing your stitches together to ensure the hair tie is fully covered. Join with a slip stitch into the first single crochet at the beginning of the round.
- Chain 3 (this counts as your first stitch). Work another double crochet (DC) into first stitch (base of the ch 3), and then place 2 DCs into every stitch to the end of of row. Slip stitch into first stitch to join.
- Chain 3 (this counts as your first DC). DC into each st to the end of row. Slip stitch into first stitch to join.

Method 2 – Classic scrunchie:
- String up any beads you may be using. Chain 60.
- Double crochet into 4th chain from hook (first 3 chains count as DC). DC into each chain to end of row. Turn work.
- Ch3 (counts as DC), DC into each stitch to end of row. Turn work.
- Repeat previous row for a total of 6 rows, adding beads as you go.
- Fasten off.
- Fold the strip in half, around your hair elastic.
- SC along the edge to make a tube all the way around the elastic. (You can sew this instead of SC but I like the pronounced edge it creates when joining with SC. Fasten off and leave a very long tail about XXcm long.
- Using the long tail sew up the two ends together (i like to use mattress stitch).
